Biocomposite boards- a great alternative to wood particle boardsPosted by: Flavia A. Giraldo Tagged in: biocomposite boards

Biocomposite boards are made from a variety of crops residues and agricultural by-products like: wheat, rice, barley, straw, sunflower hulls, bluegrass, hemp, soybean, etc. They are also known as wheat sheet, agricultural or ag board, straw board or wheat board. The pulp from crop is pressed with adhesives into sheets and then cut into boards.
Do not forget to check if the manufacturer is using binders that are water based, low VOC and formaldehyde- free. They are a great example of a renewable resource since crops are harvested annually when compared to trees that take decades to grow. Just like wood, biocomposite boards decompose naturally back into the soil.
A drawback of this type of product is that the removal of great quantities of crops from the land may leave topsoil affected exposing the soil to erosion easily. That is something that we definitely need to keep in mind and be cautious about.
Have this product in mind next time you want to use non structural panels and particleboards for ceilings, wall coverings, doors, frames, furniture, cabinetry, flooring, shelving and paneling.
