It may seem jarring to see the term “eco-friendly” in the same sentence as “Mad Men,” a television show that depicts the period of shameless wastefulness of the early 1960s. Gas guzzling cars, polyester and littering have all been featured on this show, but don’t worry, I’m not as good as Don Draper and am not about to convince you that this era was anything but decadent and destructive. What I do want to discuss is the amazing style featured on the show and how you can easily bring that into your home in a green and eco-friendly manner.
The same attention to detail that is exhibited in the nuanced characters and engaging storyline is also showcased in each and every detail of the production design. I find myself admiring the fabulous oversized lamps, sleek credenzas and modern art used in the executive offices of Sterling Cooper, or Betty and Don’s glamorous tufted headboard, all the while trying to keep up with the plot. Not so easy, I tell you!
What is easy is the acquisition of that fantastic period style in an eco-friendly manner. Vintage mid-century furnishings are still readily available, many for reasonable prices. One of my favorite online resources for mid century modern furniture and accessories is Lushpad. You can find everything from sofas to vases here, often at a fraction of what you would spend in a trendy store. Another great resource for your retro design is Daisy Janie, which features eco-friendly fabrics (photo below) printed in fun, hip patterns that would feel right at home in Pete’s amazing Park Avenue apartment.
So, don’t feel bad wanting to emulate the style of this fantastic show. It’s easy to do in an eco-friendly manner that will leave you admired for both your taste AND your commitment to the planet.
