Waste Management's ThinkGreen site, found at http://www.thinkgreen.com/, has a couple of interesting calculators that help you rethink waste.
One calculator asks you what you've recycled --> I put in the two cans, 1 glass bottle, 2 plastic bottles and a stack of paper and the calculator says I "saved 1.65 kw/hr or enough to watch 8 movies."
Yes, a lot of what this website is all about is Waste Management (WM) giving itself a pat on the back... maybe a bit of greenwashing too.
I used this site to learn more about recycling, because who doesn't have questions on that topic. Like that juice tetra box container thingy -- to recycle or not to recycle? It is paper and has plastic at the spout... And what about plastic bags? According to the site, "to produce 100 million new plastic bags requires the energy equivalent of about 8,300 barrels of oil (for extracting the raw materials, manufacturing the bags, transporting them, and collecting the used bags)."
So if you have questions on recycling, would like to read about interesting case studies like WM helping Dell go green, or even some classroom tools on the subject of waste, check out Waste Management's ThinkGreen site.
